What makes you tick?

Wishing you a very happy and healthy New Year.

The start of a new year is a great time to really understand what makes you tick, the thing that really motivates you.  Once you have discovered this, making goals, getting jobs done, spending time with people and even making changes to your life can seem fairly straight forward.

Are you ready to discover how?

It’s all about your personal values.  Your personal values are the things that make you tick – these can be anything from valuing integrity, humour, and trust.  These values are yours and yours alone and can’t be changed.  They are not tangible – they are not things that you have or things you do.

In an ideal world you would be ‘honouring’ all your values in your life, however often we neglect some of our values and our actions can be out of synch with what really drives and motivates us.

If values are so important, how many people know what their personal values are and how much these are being honoured on a daily basis?

Do you know what your values are?  Try this quick exercise to help identify yours.

  • First of all, think about what your personal values are.
  • Write these down – you can use more than one word to describe your value i.e. fun/humour.
  •  Prioritise your identified values – are you missing any?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the lowest and 10 the highest) identify how much each value is currently in your life.
  • Next, compare how you have prioritised your values, to how much you currently have this value in your life and ask yourself – is this the right balance?
  •  If you feel that you are not ‘honouring’ some of your values enough – consider what can you do to have more of that value in our life and what you will achieve by that.
  • And do it.

I can assure you, you will feel more harmony once your values are being significantly honoured in your life.

The beginning of a new year is a great time for reflection on these matters and what a great way to start 2010 with improved awareness of what your values are – after all these are things that drive and motivate us.

Now as play is a personal value I hold, I am going to make the most of the snow we currently have!

And if you are a parent and are interested in learning more about identifying and building your values into you life, sign up now to hear about the brand new coaching service I will be launching soon – just for parents.
